What tools do I need to do Online Therapy?
Most standard laptops, tablets, or phones come with everything you need to do online therapy. As long as you have access to a good internet connect, a camera, and a microphone, you are good to go!
Do you use Skype for therapy?/ Is this like Skype?
Skype is a great for chatting with friends or catching up with relatives, but it isn’t quite secure enough for therapy. Because I want my clients to feel completely secure, I use a website called Doxy.me for all of my online therapy. Doxy.me is HIPAA approved and is used by doctors, therapists, and other helping professionals to help clients across the world in a secure, safe space. The process is exactly like Skype except you don’t have to download anything to your computer. See “How does Doxy.me work” in the questions below to learn more.
Is Online Therapy Effective?
Yes! In fact, study after study is showing that online therapy is at least as effective as in-person therapy in the majority of cases.
Who is Online Therapy for?
If you aren’t intimidated by technology, want to save time/money on a commute to therapy, or would enjoy doing therapy from the comfort of wherever, Online Therapy is perfect for you! While online therapy is an awesome resource, it’s not for everyone. If you would feel more comfortable meeting with someone in person and away from technology, online therapy probably isn’t for you. I also do not meet with clients who might have a difficult time keeping themselves emotionally or physically safe (ie suicidal or strong psychological disabilities) since I would not be able to help you in a crisis situation due to our physical distance.
How does Doxy.me work?
Doxy.me is a Telehealth platform that allows helping professionals to meet with their clients from a secure, virtual space. For our first session together, you will go to https://doxy.me/mindfultherapysolutions. From there, you will put in your name and give the program permission to access your camera and microphone. You’ll see a virtual waiting room and can wait for our session to begin. That’s it! You’re good to go. If you are planning on accessing therapy from a phone, tablet, or ipad- you can download the Doxy.me app for free and follow the same process. Super user friendly and super secure.
I want to try Online Therapy, but I don’t know if it will be a good fit.
If you feel like you want to give Online Therapy a try, give it a try! If at the end of the first session you get the feeling that you would like to do something else, I definitely won’t hold that against you. I’ll be happy to help you find a local therapist and refer you over to him/her.
